Powerful Earthquake Jolts Russia’s Kamchatka
The Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences stated that the quake struck at 1:59 p.m. local time (0159 GMT) at a depth of 51.2 kilometers, located roughly 170 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital. Numerous residents in the city reported experiencing the tremor, according to the agency’s official Telegram channel.
The Emergency Situations Ministry of Kamchatka confirmed that the aftershock registered an intensity of up to 4 on the local scale in both Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the nearby town of Vilyuchinsk. Officials noted that no tsunami alert was issued following this event.
On Sunday, Kamchatka was rocked by a series of powerful earthquakes, the largest reaching a magnitude of 7.6. Social media footage showed store shelves being emptied by falling goods and furniture violently shaking inside homes.
Following the second significant quake on Sunday, authorities briefly issued a tsunami warning for coastal Pacific areas, which was later canceled after a few hours.
