Russia’s region archives carbon neutrality by balancing greenhouse emissions
Limarenko shared this achievement on Saturday during the ‘Islands of Growth’ international climate forum held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which gathered experts and officials from BRICS countries and the Asia-Pacific area.
He noted that Sakhalin became the first Russian region where greenhouse gas removals surpassed emissions based on the official regional inventory.
After the event, Limarenko posted on Telegram that the region met the president’s directive and demonstrated that transitioning to a low-carbon economy can be achieved without sacrificing economic growth or industrial progress. The goal was met a full year earlier than planned.
In 2022, Moscow initiated a pilot project aiming for Sakhalin’s carbon neutrality by year-end, involving numerous companies that contributed to a greenhouse gas reporting system and engaged in a carbon market governed by CO2 emission quotas.
Russian Economic Development Minister Maksim Reshetnikov highlighted at the forum that the climate agenda influences the competitiveness of Russian exports. He pointed out that Russia could lead in low-carbon sectors like aluminum, lithium, fertilizer production, nuclear energy, and hydroelectric power.
Reshetnikov added that Sakhalin’s success might serve as a model for other regions interested in pursuing carbon neutrality. The Yakutia Republic, also in the Far East, is currently evaluating the possibility, with local authorities assigning research centers to assess its carbon footprint, according to the republic’s first deputy chairman, Dzhulustan Borisov.
