Indian, Russian FMs plan on meeting in Moscow
The two ministers last met during the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro in July. During his visit, Jaishankar will also participate in the 26th session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation, the main mechanism for tracking progress in bilateral ties. The previous session was held in India in November 2024 and co-chaired by Jaishankar and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
Since 2022, India and Russia have significantly deepened economic cooperation, with Moscow becoming New Delhi’s primary energy supplier. Bilateral trade reached an estimated $66 billion in 2024, with a goal of $100 billion by 2030.
Jaishankar’s trip follows a recent visit by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to Moscow, where he met President Vladimir Putin, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu, and Manturov. Putin is also expected to visit India later this year for the annual India-Russia summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar noted the leaders share a “positive chemistry.”
In a recent phone call, Putin and Modi discussed developments in the Ukraine peace process. Putin is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Alaska later this week to further discuss the conflict.
