Russia Dismisses Navalny Poison Allegations as "Fake News"

(MENAFN) Moscow dismisses allegations from five European nations regarding opposition leader Alexey Navalny's cause of death, with Russia's Foreign Ministry labeling the accusations as fabricated deflection tactics.

In statements delivered to multiple Russian media organizations, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rejected claims that Navalny succumbed to dart frog toxin poisoning, characterizing the assertions as "fake."

Zakharova accused Western governments of using the allegations to shift focus away from domestic crises.

"There will be test results, there will be formulas of the substances -- then there will be a comment," she said. "Without this, all statements and talk are a fake aimed at diverting attention from the pressing problems of the West."

The Russian official suggested the timing was calculated, noting the claims surfaced "at the moment when it would be necessary to present the results of the investigation into Nord Stream pipeline explosion."

The Nord Stream infrastructure—linking Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea—suffered catastrophic sabotage in 2022, marking an extraordinary assault on critical energy systems.

Italy recently detained Serhii Kuznietsov, a former Ukrainian military officer implicated in the pipeline attack. Ukraine continues to categorically reject any connection to the incident.

A joint declaration issued Saturday by Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, and France alleged Navalny was killed with epibatidine—a lethal compound derived from Ecuadorian poison dart frog skin.

The finding stems from laboratory analysis of Navalny's biological specimens, the coalition statement indicated.

Navalny died in a Siberian penal facility in February 2024, as announced by Moscow, while serving a 19-year term for extremism-related convictions.
