Provided by AGPIn recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted northwestern regions of Russia, including energy infrastructure in the Leningrad area. Some UAVs reportedly crashed in neighboring NATO countries such as Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland.
In a statement released Tuesday, Russia’s SVR claimed that Ukraine “does not intend to limit itself to using the air corridors provided to the Ukrainians armed by the Baltic states.”
According to the agency, “The plan is to also launch the UAVs from the territory of these countries” against Russia in order “to significantly reduce the time it takes to reach the targets and increase the effectiveness of the terrorist attacks.”
The Russian intelligence service further alleged that Ukrainian drone personnel have already been stationed at several Latvian military facilities, including bases in Adazi, Selija, Lielvarde, Daugavpils, and Jekabpils.
The statement claimed Kyiv convinced Riga to cooperate by arguing that identifying the exact launch points of drones would be impossible. Russian officials rejected that argument, saying modern surveillance technology and debris analysis allow launch locations to be traced accurately.
The SVR warned that “the coordinates of decision-making centers on Latvian territory are well known, and the country’s NATO membership will not protect the accomplices of terrorists from just retribution.”
The agency also criticized Latvian leadership, saying “Ultimately, the ‘caveman-like Russophobia’ of current Latvian leaders proved to be stronger than their capability for critical thinking and their sense of self-preservation.”
According to the Russian statement, Ukraine is preparing additional drone operations to convince its “ideological and financial supporters in Europe” that it remains capable of continuing military operations and damaging the Russian economy.
