FSB Alleges Western Intelli Hacked Devices of Russian Officials

(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has claimed that Western intelligence agencies carried out cyber operations targeting mobile phones used by Russian officials and other individuals with access to classified or sensitive information.

According to the agency, devices belonging to diplomats, political figures, senior military personnel, and journalists were compromised, enabling foreign intelligence services to monitor surroundings and extract large volumes of data.

The FSB stated that the intrusion was achieved through a so-called “zero-day vulnerability,” a previously unknown software flaw that can be exploited before developers have a chance to fix it.

The agency also argued that the scale of information collected would previously have been impossible to process manually, but that artificial intelligence systems are now being used to analyze such data rapidly and efficiently.

Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab reportedly detected unusual network activity on Apple devices used by staff members, which led to the start of the investigation in 2023, according to the FSB.

Officials further claimed that Western cyber-espionage capabilities have been developing for decades, particularly since the introduction of the Patriot Act in 2001, which expanded the authority of US intelligence agencies to obtain data from technology companies under national security provisions.

The FSB also referenced earlier surveillance controversies involving the United States, including the 2013 revelation that US intelligence services had monitored communications of then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, arguing that such cases demonstrate the global reach of Western intelligence operations.
